Slow start to the new year
Jamie Kohns on January 6th, 2006
Five days of 2006 done with now, and other than the first couple hours of the new year, nothing much is going on. Tuesday had one new release of note: The Strokes‘ First Impressions of Earth. I like the single, but beyond that, didn’t hear too much that impressed me. The Strokes never impressed me- noise for noise’s sake.
I went out last night- didn’t plan to at all, but I needed out of the house- so I wound up at the Cosmopolitan Lounge in midtown, listening to Gary Pfaff do an acoustic set. I first saw Gary do the solo acoustic thing at East Andrews a couple summers ago. I was there celebrating somebody’s brithday with a gorup of friends, and stopped for a bit to admire the talented guy playing for a 300 people that could care less about music. Anyways, last night was a reminder of what had caused me to stop and listen that night- the guy’s incredible! Check out his band Obsession Day on myspace.
Oh, and I’m listening to The Crimea today, started hearing their single Lottery Winners on Acid late last year, and it’s grown on me. Hard to describe, but good stuff- sorta like a darker version of Clap Your Hands Say Blah- if they were really good.
(Don’t mind the fancy colors, I just got bored for a bit and was playing with the editor)
