New Music Tuesday: Stereophonics, Alsyn, Glen Phillips, and Beck
jamie on March 29th, 2005
So, it's Tuesday- which, in the US means that we get new music today. Rah! (That may read less entheused that it is) Anyways, today, I got three new albums to note: Stereophonics - Language. Sex. Violence. Other? New music from the Welsh poppy-rockers appeared on their website more than a month ago, leading off with one of my favorite tracks of the year (so far), Dakota. British modern rock at some of its finest, Stereophonics produces an album whos complexity is masked by an ear-friendly poppiness. Aslyn - Lemon Love I can't say that I love Lemon Love- there was great hope in it after the early release of the single Be The Girl, but after an initial listen to the whole album, I'm not as impressed with this ATL singer/songwriter. Not that I ever saw her perform here, or even heard of her prior to the single's release, just saying it's ATL music. Anyways, the so-called 'phenominal' 493-1023, which apparently won her a record deal in the first place, just does not sit well in my ears- even when played through my beautiful ear monitors (I so love them!). Gotta Get Over You shows some promise, so I won't give up on Aslyn all together yet. Glen Phillips - Winter Pays For Summer Glen Phillips, the "voice of Toad The Wet Sprocket" (that makes him sound like a television presenter or something) releases his second full solo album today. This time, Glen's sound is a more polished, but not a way that makes it glare in your eyes too brightly. Rather, the highly introspective and thoughful album contains several tracks previously released on the live ablum Live At Largo- here in full studio production glory. One gripe however, on Easier, just go ahead and say the "…whole fucking ear…", it's okay- I just did. We're all adults here, we've heard it before, and "freakin'" just doesn't cut the mustard Glen. But I still love your music anyway. And last, but not least: Beck - Guero Beck is back! And in his previous state of garage-mix beats and nonsensical lyricism. I enjoyed Sea Change, it showed that there was an artist under all the showmanship and over-hyped production of the 90's. But damn! Guero is GOOOooooD! Ever since a few tracks "leaked" to the net several months ago, I've been waiting to hear the rest. And Beck delivers with songs like the single E-pro (yes, I know you've all heard it on the radio already), and Hell Yes (my favorite), and Rental Car. Looking forward to US releases of: Athelete - The Tourist Feeder - Pushing the Senses Wanted, but couldn't get: The Mountain Goats - Zopilote Machine Currently diggin' on: The new single fro the upcoming Gorillas album, Dirty Harry
