California - Day 1
jamie on November 6th, 2005
Five hours - that’s all it took to bring me across the country to California, and now I’m in San Diego- but yesterday was spent in Los Angeles (Hell-A). I got off the plane at LAX, grabbed a cab to Molly Malone’s Irish Pub just off of Wilshire, near the LA County Art Museum. A few friendly locals (and a few pints) helped me pass the time until my friend Melissa arrived. We explored a tar pit for a bit, then headed over to the restaurant for dinner. Kimmi and Scott were supposed to meet us there at 6- traffic held them up until about 8, so it was just me and Mel for dinner, then off to the Wiltern Theater for James Blunt and Jason Mraz. The Wiltern is an amazing venue- a classic theater converted to accomodate rock shows by removing the seats from the terraced ground levels. Amazingly, security kept the aisles clear without ropes, railings or any barriers other than white tape lines. After a great show, I rejoined Scott and Kim (who was alredy passed out in the back of the car) for the drive to SD. What should have been a simple matter of following the 5 south to SD in a matter of a couple hours, turned into an adventure in navigating detour routes. Apparently, last night was chosen as the night they’d knock down an overpass bridge, and the detour route was very poorly marked, so we didn’t get in until after 3 in the morning- which was about 24 hours after I left the apartment back in ATL. Tired as I was, it had been an awesome day, and I was glad to be in Cali again. Today, Kim had to work a surf contest in Oceanside, so Scott and I went to a friend’s house to watch some american football, and drink a lot of Stella- at least I drank a lot of Stella. Oh, and I got the play-by-play on the Chelsea-Man U. game- the Blues’ winning streak has been broken! It was so depressing, but there are still 20-some matches to go in the season, and I’m sure they’ll win 90% of those, and still be champions again. Anyway, it’s time to get some food- not Beach City Burritos time yet, but I’m sure that’ll come early in the week. I hear it calling me all the way from Cardiff (I hear there’s on down here too).
