KT Tunstall @ The Loft - Atlanta
jamie on March 13th, 2006
Saturday was a verylong day for me: I got up at 6:30 AM to watch my beloved Chelsea win 2-1 over Tottenham, thanks to a 92nd-minute screamer by William Gallas. Then it was off to the park for a bit of footie myself (I'm terrible). So it was no surprise that I was completely knackered later that evening, but I had something important to do, and the adreneline rush I got in anticipation kept me going.

(yes, I know my cameraphone pictures are crap)
Ever since Black Horse and the Cherry Tree first played on Radio1 back in 2004, I've been an undying fan of KT Tunstall. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a while for an artist in the UK to build up the momentum to make the touring leap across the pond. So I waited…
At about 10:30 PM Saturday night, my wait was over. After what seemed like an eternity of listening to the most boring drivel ever from Cary Brothers, KT Tunstall danced onto stage at the Loft in Atlanta. Playing with a full band (I'd still love to see her do the one-woman show she was so well known for), Tunstall was absolutely enthralling as she poured through songs from her album Eye To The Telescope, plus a couple of new songs. Even the insanely rude ugly girls next to us, who seemed to think that their conversations about their own little sorority-girl dramas were more improtant than actually listening to the artist that sold out the venue, couldn't bring down the level of excitement in the room (Yes, that was a run-on sentence. No, I don't care about the grammar. Yes, if you talk through a show, you suck. Yes, they really were ugly). While playing Tunstall changed guitars nearly every song, an indicator of the vast array of sounds she employs in her music. Even the band was called upon to add additional timbres to the mix. The keyboard player broke out his trumpet several times, and the bassist moved the cello for a bit near the end of the set. Even with such a talented backing band, she still employed her trusty loop pedals for several of the songs, adding her own overdub to the live mix. While introducing a new song, KT said that she had recently found time to start writing new music "…which makes me happy- and my record label". It makes me happy too. Eye To The Telescope was my number 3 pick for best albums of 2005, and given that I'm still listening to it in March, it might even end up on my best of 2006 list, unless Tunstall turns out a new album before December.
