The Freddy Jones Band @ VaHi Summerfest This Weekend!

The Freddy Jones Band
Freddy Jones Band is playing the Virginia-Highland Summerfest this weekend! I’m so stoked on this- being from the midwest, I saw them many times throughout my college years and they’re one of my all-time favorite bands. The last time I went to see them, however, I showed up at the venue to find out the show had been cancelled. Shortly after that, it was announced that FJB had disbanded and were no more. Arrrrgh!

The group has since reunited, and are playing several dates across the country this summer- including the two-day FREE music festival this weekend. Other SquirrelFood favorites Bain Mattox and Obsession Day are also scheduled to play (full schedule HERE).

The Freddy Jones Band - Wonder (Live)
The Freddy Jones Band - Take the Time (Live)

UPDATE: Just after Bain Mattox finished his set, it began to rain, and eventually became a bit of a downpour. Thankfully, it passed soon enough for FJB to take the stage, and play a set of favorites. There was a pretty big crowd of people who stuck it out through the rain to see the band, and made for a great show!

Gnarls Barkley Removes ‘Crazy’ From UK Charts

Gnarls BarkleyAfter nine weeks atop the UK radio charts, the Cee-Lo/Dangermouse collaboration of Gnarls Barkley have deleted their international hit sinlge Crazy from the UK charts, in an effort to focus attention on their next single Smiley Faces. The single has only reached number 38 on Billboard’s Hot 100 [US] chart in three weeks there. Currently topping that chart: Ridin’ from Houston rapper Chamillionaire…ugh.

In a press release, the duo said (as a singular Gnarls Barkley) “I consider myself a realist, I suppose that goes for most of us. But I have found a way to at once hold them, fold them, walk away and run. This was not a painless decision. But pain is nothing but a bi-product of beauty. Potentially toxic, to be sure, but that’s all it is.”

Smiley Faces drops as a single on July 17 in the UK, but will the tactic work for Gnarls?

Friday Mixtape Volume 21

Friday Mixtape Volume 21This week’s mixtape is yet another fine colletion- 12 tracks from 11 artists from various different genres. 12 track, but 11 artists- but ther eare 12 band names? Yep. The last track this week is from Public Affection- the name of an Erie, Pensylvania band before they changed it and released thier first album under the name Live. I dug through my crates of CD’s this week to find the old copy of Death Of A Dictionary (released as Public Affection on cassette tape in 1989) to include a track on the post this week about Live’s new release Songs From Black Mountain. I figured I’d trow another on the mixtape, since I spent all that time sorting through hundreds of random old CD’s. I just heard the Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly! track on Zane Lowe this week, and while the quality isn’t the best, I’m really diggin’ the song, and I haven’t stopped listening to Holly Brook since I saw her do Jay Leno earlier this week. Alexandra Patsavas and crew from Chop Shop Music Supervision turned me on to yet another track this week- from the band Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin -at least, that’s what their myspace is listed as- which gives me an idea for a future mixtape: bands with strange, long, or generally uncommon name. Look for it soon! Nerina Pallot’s track been making the round in the UK, stirring up a bit on controversy I think, but I ten to agree with her. Ordinary Boys put their spin on Lady Sovereign, and I like it better this wasy, and oh- I put a new Less Than Jake track on- the most un-LTJ sounding track I’ve heard. It’s got synths on it, and sounds a bit of an athem- about as far from the ska-punk double-time stuff that has defined them. It’s really gorwn on me quickly though, and I think it just fits in nicely here.

Anwyay- enjoy it by downloading it HERE (this week is about 50 MB - not sure if I’ll still be taking this one down on Sunday, or if I’m leaving it up through the holiday Monday, but get it while you can)!

Holly Brook

Holly BrookI just caught Mike Shinoda on Leno, playing his new single from his Fort Minor solo project Where’d You Go, which is catchy, but wow Holly Brook is beautiful! She reminds me of Scarlett Johansson, but with a lovely voice and piano skills (I don’t know for a fact that Scarlett can’t play or sing, but Holly Brook can). Her album is due out June 6, titled Like Blood, Like Honey, and it’s very much like a young Sarah McLachlan. You can stream the album on aol music.

Brit Waxes Poetic or K-Fed’s Sins?

The Sun reports that Brit may have been slamming hubby K-Fed when she posted a poem on her website Saturday, which was quietly removed hours later…trouble in the Federline household now that Brit’s officially preggo again? It’s better than watching The OC!
