I've got another mixed-bag of great songs for your Friday Mixtape this week, and it's all over the spectrum. From the pure pop of The Feeling and acoustic melody of Landon Pigg (what an unfortunate name) to new new hip-hip from the Roots, down to the nitty gritty blues riffs of the Black Keys. The Holloways make some music with fiddle-vs-guitar riffage (I'm a sucker for any fiddle/violin music), which I can't classify, so just give it a listen. From what looks like it's going to be the worst movie of the year (and as an ophidiophile, one I won't be seeing), the theme song is a fun rocker- just ignore the movie tie-in (BTW: the whole soundtrack looks to be a great OST, done by the awesome people at Fueled By Ramen). Spoon re-released Telephono this week, giving us another real rocker for the mix. I intercut the Example take on Lily's Smile to make Smile/Vile- just for kicks, and Kasabian's new song is officially cool. So is NYC's Alice Smith, but in a different way, mosre smooth a& sexy cool. The Blackbud are new to me, but I'm really diggin' them so far, and Captain has been on the radio a lot, but I just didn't pick get them until I picked up Glorious- now, they're a new favorite.
This week's cover art is from victoregeere, picked because I really liked the perfectly contrasting colors, and it's got cows. Voctorgeere has a knack for colors, and I'm thinking about using another of his shots for a future SFFM. Check out his work, and try to guess which of his other shots I'm eyeing) at flickr.com/photos/victorgeere.
First, Lily Allen took a shot at 50 Cent's track track- now, Example (on Mike Skinner's label, The Beats) takes his shot at Lily's chart-topping single Smile. It's witty and it works. I'm sure Lily can take it, hopefuly even give some back.
Lily even thinks it's a good laugh: "to all who were wondering he was never my boyfriend . I do think his version is very funny though . and I think the sock video is pretty good too ." (from her website)
Contrast Podcast is a collective podcast by music bloggers with a different theme each week- this week's theme was "WHO", and marks my first contribution tot eh effort. You can hear me introduce my track by going to www.timyoung.net/contrast. Next week's theme is instrumentals, with the intros sung, so I might have to grace afflict the world with my singing voice. Enjoy.
First off, Guster on Friday night was great. The boys still put on a great show, goofing with the audience and all. What wasn't cool was Ray LaMontagne's performance. The guy walked onto the stage, plugged in, and started playing. He said nothing throughout the entire show, and did little more anything but just play through each song. They may as well have plugged in a CD player, and given the guy the night off. Seriously, Ray, it's your job- people pay good money to come see you- give them a show, or go work in a shoe store.
UPDATE:Mel tells me this mornin that Ray has been taken OFF the rest of the Guster tour!
It's Monday, and I'm feeling a bit lazy- so I'm gonna regurgitate some stuff that other bloggers posted today for ya:
iGIF really likes the new Ratatat. I listened to it, and dind't quite get as into as Connor, but I'll give it another chance.
The Late Greats posted a great live set from Alexi Murdoch, who's song Orange Sky has been used in more television, film and adverts that I care to count, and I still like it.
Premiered on Zane Lowe tonight, and available shortly thereafter, Kasabian's first single from their upcoming album is called Empire. Stream it from their site: WINREAL
It's going to be a hot weekend! Pool plans, Guster and Ray LaMontagne tonight, and I've got a mixtape full of new stuff! Starting with the acoustic rendition of Bullets from Editors. Stereogum (still hacked) gave us new Ben Kweller this week, and I really like it. Razorlight did an amazing set on Zane Lowe's show, and I've included the sublime America, from their new album. I've been hearing Cord a lot lately, and haven't made up my mind on them yet, but Winter has helped them grow on me. Another Fueled by Ramen act, The Academy Is… (are you realy supposed to include the elipsis?) slows down for a minute, and the Fratellis stop creeping up stairs, and sing Henrietta. The View are on fire, or at least that's what their website says. The single is hot, and so are the rest of the tracks on their myspace. Atlanta locals Jil Station droped their debut album this week- Vanguard sounds a lot like Moz here. The Working Title have had their single The Mary Getaway out for a hell of a long time, and finally we get fresh stuff from them this week, though I'm not convinced. Some reviewer compared it to Radiohead this week- does everything compare to Radiohead these days? I sincerely hope not. Basement Jaxx are back, and Hush Boy is just classic Jaxx. The much-hyped MSTRKRFT album dropped this week, and Easy Love always gets my foot-tapping groove going. I heard Aaron LaCrate's mix of spank Rock's Blow on Mark Ronson a couple weeks ago, and I'm really into his stuff now (esp. the Oxi Cottontail bit). Fergie goes solo with London Bridge this week, which very distinctly reminds me of some Gwen Stefani, but with better production. Also, I really dug her in Poseidon. The Roots are back. NYC's Domino (that amazing voice on Mark Ronson's version of No One Knows), gets tropical, ending SFFM volume 29.
Artwork this week by flickr user babsteve, whos pages are filled with brilliant photos from all around the globe. His ability to capture people is truly amazing, and not shown in the cover image- so go check him out here.
Squirrelfood favorite blog-to-read & primary envy Stereogum got hacked late yesterday. The asshats left a message later, which was still visible this morning.
So what if "SUFJAN" was a poor password? What good does hacking a music blog realy do? Hackers are asshats. Hope you can get the site back up soon, Scott.
