This is the spot where I post the weekly mixtape of new music- every week, pouring over all the new stuff that comes across my desk, trying my damnedest to come up with something fresh. But this weekend, I wrap up my third decade in life, and will celebrate that fact with friends from out of town, football, beer, and a mixtape of some of my favorite artists & tracks of the year- so far.
An awesome birthday gift this year would be a 4-0 Chelsea win on Sunday at Blackburn.
Unless I really overdo it this weekend, the podcast should go up on Tuesday.
Artwork this week comes from teagrrl, and was found using the search term "BIRTHDAY" on flickrlilly.
A friend introduced me to ImprovEverywhere.com last year, when they did something they call "Even Better Than The Real Thing" (it's pretty great). These poeple organize public "missions", where they sometimes enlist the help of hundreds of citizens to perform mass practical jokes. This week, they do one called "Slo-Mo Home Depot", where over 200 people invade a Home Depot center, and proceed to shop in slow motion, eventually freezing in place.
Where's the music in all this? Well, it's not really al that musical at all- except that just before they group were set to freeze, Jewel's Standing Still started playing over the Home Depot PA system. But I thought the video coverage from the site was so great that I had to post about it. So go check it out, and enjoy your Friday! The Mixtape will be up at it's usual time.
Tha Bomb Shelter has a great post on Larrikin Love. Can Anyone explain to me what their song Happy As Annie is about? I think I should be disturbed by it,but can't be certain.
Pretty much everybody is picking up today's story that Keane singer Tom Chaplin has checked himself into rehab for alcohol and drug abuse. Another thing I don't get: why can relatively small acts tour tirelessly (I know several) without aquiring major drug habits, but as soon as someone's big, they need drugs to keep up? I mean, I'm sure it's a hell of a lot harder touring in a big fat bus with tour support and contract riders. Sheesh.

Also, the new SFFMv33 podcast is ready- the podcast player already has it, but the feed and download will not be ready until later today (ezarchive.com is a pain to work with). There are BONUS trax on the podcast this week (two of them- songs that weren't on the mixtape download….ooo, tricky)! Listen with the podcast player (top right) NOW!
In case you haven't noticed, I've added a new podcast version of the Friday Mixtape to the site. It's up there on top of the sidebar to your right. Normally, I take the Mixtape down on Sunday, and that's it. Now, the mixtape will live on through the week as a podcast. You can subscribe to the podcast via this link, or just ocme listen to it through my nifty podcast player (while listening on the site player, you may find links to extra tracks, downloads and other cool shite while it's playing).
Also, I haven't posted much this week- mostly because I'm offline at home due to a cable modem failure, and Comcast's rediculous policy that no equipment may be swapped at service centers. Rather, they insist that a technician come to your house and hand you the new modem. Of course, this means waiting at home for half a day to collect said modem. Comcast sucks. Oh, and I've been sick.
Anyway, about the mixtape this week: I have to thank several other blogs for their (unwitting) help in making this week's playlist. Every week, I get tons of new music and bands from bloggers all over the world (my newsreader has over 200 subscriptions these days), this week, I choose to point a few ofhtem out. Wild Mercury posted the acoustic version of The Raconteurs' Steady As She Goes this week- go thank Mark for that. Jack at Pound For Pound posted that Junior Boys track, and Heather at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends posted posted Ryan Auffenberg this week - thank them by visiting their blogs. And stereogum posted the new Veruca Salt track earlier this week - if you don't already check stereogum every day (like me), go do it now. Finally, Leah at Confessions of a Music Addict posted As Tal As Lions today- so go thank her for that one.
Cover art this week from Baboon (what kinda name is that?). I just liked the richness of that green wall, and the way th echair contrasts it. I'm a sucker for contrast. Baboon has lots of colorful and constrast-y photos on his flickr page. go there. now.
Introducing the SquirrelFood.net Friday Mixtape Podcast!
The podcast folows the tracklisting of the SFFM each week, and may include extra tracks not found in the original download. I've also created a special Flash-based player here, with will include links and info about each of the tracks, and occassionally extra download links (oooo!). This podcast is a little rough (volume levels are a bit off), which should be resolved with new software, coming soon. Hopefully, I can find the time to do this each week!
Speaking of podcasts, this week's Contrast Podcast is available, with contributions from music bloggers around the world, including your truly. Give it a listen- after you listen to SFFMv32!
[EDITED: The podcast player is now on the sidebar ->]
Gran Bel Fisher is a 24-year-old singer/songwriter originally from a small town in Ohio. After a series of moves to Cincinnatti, New York City, and finally Los Angels, Fisher signed with Hollywood records after impressing them at his first showcase at the Viper Room. He's not lost his midwest-rooted sound though, and uses his unique barratone voice to all it's advantage. His album, Full Moon Cigarette is out now, and was mostly recorded in NYC with Michael Brauer, whos credits include Travis, Athlete, Ben Folds, The Kooks, Coldplay, and Jamie Scott (see SFFM 32).
Fisher is performing tomorrow night with Corinne Bailey Rae at the Loft in Atlanta.
So it's Friday, and here's another mixtape for you. While I normally ramble about the tracks on the mix here every week, I just don't feel like it today. Check out each artists, if you like what you hear, get the album(s).
After a disappointing World Cup this summer, I'm ready for the start of the English Premiership season, which officially kicks of next weekend. This weekend, however, Chelsea face off against Liverpool in the Community Shield on Sunday. speaking of my beloved Blues, Chelsea skipper John Terry has been named as the England National team's new captain, after Beckham stepped down following the World Cup. Okay, enough football talk. In the music world, go see Vaya and Garlington play at The 585 this weekend. I'll be there. Listen to some music, and have a great weekend!
Cover photo today comes from froodmat. I found it, and photos for several weeks worth of mixtapes using FlickrLilli, a cool flickr-search tool that finds Creative Commons images based on your query, and can return results sorted by their "interestingness" (as ranked by flickr.com). It's pretty nifty, and makes my job of finding cover photos easier. Of course, if you have an image that you'd like to see as the cover of an uncoming mixtape, drop me a nope in the comment box to your right!
I'm now contributing to the Commercial Music Blog, focussing on music used in television commercials. My first post on the blog: a VW commercial, yeah I love my car (but I'll gladly trade it in for one of those new EOS convertibles). I've been whistling this song all day now…
It's been a busy week, and my head's been all over the place, so I've only posted there once this week (which is more than I've done here). I hope to be posting more frequently in the future- on both blogs! I'm gonna try and make up for some of my lack in blogginess today.
My name is Jamie, and I'm just trying to share my love of great new music. Files are for sampling purposes only, and intended only to promote music. If you are the copyright owner of a sound file and would like me to take it down, let me know and I'll gladly comply.
