If you didn't already know- Halloween is next Tuesday, and most people (including me) are celebrating at fancy dress parties all weekend long. What are you going to dress as? Send me links to you in your best costume in the comments. The mix itself isn't Halloween themed- rather, it's just another great collection of new music. I didn't have time amidst various projects (including making a costume- duh) to be clever like that. I probably could have compiled a list of old Halloween 'standards' for you, but no doubt 1) they would all have been heard before, 2) are probably already available as som ecommercial compilation at Best Buy and 3) really boring. So, I've stuck with the usual format and pulled together some really class tracks. The one deviation in this week's mix is the distinct lack of any rap, hip-hop or R&B. It wasn't intentional. I just didn't find anything new that I really liked there. Anyway, enjoy volume 43 and have a great Halloween!
Also, today is my sister's birhtday, and though I know she doens't regularly read the blog, I want to give her a little birthday shout here today! Happy BD Sara!
The amazingly spooky photo is from the aptly named flickr.com user ghostbones, whose amazing photography is perfect for the holiday. There's a real sense of a story told in this image, and the contrast, compositino and creative design are all perfectI've spent a lot of time parusing his collection online, in absolute awe at the compositions and imagry. Check it out for yourself here.

I don't get cartoons anymore- Spongebob and Foster's and all those asian anime-action-adventure things that end up as card games. What ever happened to Scooby Doo, Thundercats and The Chipmunks? Anyway, this line of thought was brought to you by centripetalnotion.com, who posted a half-speed version of the Chipmunks' famous Christmas Don't Be Late. By listening at this speed, you can actually hear Chipmonks creator, song writer, and vocalist Ross Bagdasarian singing in his own voice. I remember recording my own voice at half speed, then playing it back full-speed to hear myself as a chipmunk when I was a kid. Anyhow, go take a listen to both versions, and read the interesting history behind hte Chipmunks and Ross Bagdasarian (written by his son) on Chipmunks.com.

Jeez, I can't seem to catch any down time this week. Busy at work- busy after work. Barely time to sleep. Although, I took an anti-histamine last night because I was around cats last night, and it knocked me right out- I got more than 8 hours last night! Anyway, nobody cares whether I sleep at night- but I bet some care about this week's mixtape! This week's mix is truly all over the genre map. Jumping from Badly Drawn Boy to My Chemical Romance to Amarie. Then, to Amy Winehouse, over to Depeche Mode, drop in on some Snoop Dogg, and even new Deftones in there. Like I said: all over the place.
The cover photo comes from Flickr.com user Josef.Stuefer. I'm not exactly sure what it's a macro photo of, but it kinda looks like a speaker grill. Speaker grill = music? Maybe, I liked it and was in a hurry, so it gets to be cover #42. Yay. Go check out the rest of Josef's photo work on his Flickr page.

MCR played live on Zane Lowe's show Wednesday night, but I've been crazy busy this week with several projects, so I'm just getting around to putting this track up. I really like the first single from the upcoming album, Welcome To The Black Parade, but then I heard another track, Mamma, where they try to rip off Gogol Bordello. Anyway, check out Cancer, live from BBC Radio1, and you can stream the whole album via www.theblackparade.com

Oh, happy Friday The Thirteenth! First: I want to a special thank you out to a reader who gave me a big shit-eatin' grin earlier this week. Stereogum.com is undoubtedly one of the biggest music/MP3 blogs out there, and I get a lot from them, and certainly respect (and envy) them. So when they posted on Damien Rice's new track this week, I wanted to see what other Stereogum readers thought of it. As I scrolled through the user comments, I came across an entry:
This was in SF's Mixtape #38
…
your slow.

That's awesome! Thank you Frank! (Frank's left me comments, but never his email, so I can't thank him directly) See, I occasionally do get on to something before Stereogum gets all over it. And of course, thank you to all the other people who send me comments and messages.
Anyway, in trying to keep the quality of the mix up to par, there's pleanty of new stuff on this week's mixtape- new Amos Lee. New Comfies (who rocked The 585 last weekend). New Rasmus. New Damien Albarn project. New bands Can Joann, Vega 4, Mexico 70, & This Is My Suitcase. New entity The Black Ghosts! (Anyone have the scoop on this? Who is it? Simon Lord and ???) On and on…
The cover photo comes again from the amazing Flickr.com collection of iboy_daniel. I knew I'd come back to his work, and probably will again.

Damon Albarn's new project The Good The Bad and The Queen is a new supergroup with Class bassist Paul Simonon, Gorillaz collaborator and guitarist Simon Tong, and drummer Tony Allen. The group has been generating a buzz now for most of the summer, and is set to debut at the BBC's Electric Proms in October. The first single for the supergorup is called Herculean, and was posted for download on Stereogum.com today.
At first listen, it just sounds like another Gorillaz track, same rhythmic style, same vocal sounds- but I have ot admit tha tit's growing on me after just a couple more plays. What do you think?

OOOOPS! I wrote this on Thursday, compiled the mixtape, then forgot to hit 'publish'. So, I'm gonn aleave it up the first part of the week for anyone who was lookin' for it while I was enjoying Atlantis…more on that later.
Volume 40!?! Wow, I can't belive I've managed to keep this up every week. Granted, I didn't start publishing the mixtapes until volume 10- but that's still 30 weeks of Friday Mixtapes! Anyway, I'm at Atlantis today, and will be hangin' around the 585 tonight, so this is going to be short and sweet: 12 tracks & 12 artists, in alphabetical order. Read about some of my recommended bands showcasing at Atlantis venues this weekend (previous post), listen to their songs, and come see me at The 585, and have a great weekend!
The cover photo comes from Flickr.com user Pepe. It's been sitting in my "posibilities" folder for a couple of months now, and I've just now decided to use it. I liked the colors, and the way the Madrin underground train was blurring by the waiting woman with no cares about where she needed to go.
