Every week, I read posts from over 200 different sources- most of them are MP3/Music bloggers just like me. They are a never-ending source of great new bands and music. Without them, this blog would probably never have even been started. This week, I wanted to highlight some of these other blogs by putting together a mixtape soley of tracks posted on their respective blogs. So, below is the tracklisting for SFFMv47, with links to the posts from which each one comes from.
Thanks to everyone who reads this blog, and I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving (those of you who celebrate this holiday - the rest have a great weekend)!
The cover photo this week comes from flickr user nicalibre, who's photo "Buy Less" is a reminder for Buy Nothing Day. Adbusters created the non-event to spotlight consumerism's effects around the world. Of course, they plan it for the biggest shopping days of the year (today in the US/Canada, tomorrow in the UK). Not that shopping is necessarily bad, but Adbusters hope to make people aware of the effects of shopping on the environment and the impoverished of the world. Maybe it's already too late for you today (you were at Wal Mart at 5 a.m., weren't you?), but try getting through tomorrow without buying anything at all- it's harder than it seems.
No shows at The 585 this weekend, but I might check out the Turkey Jam at The Loft tonight, and you can find me at Fado in Buckhead for the most important match of the year: Chelsea vs Man U.
This is a little old now, as the original article was published here on Monday, but I've been busy this week- short week and all. Anyway, seems that 679 Recordings has dropped The Futureheads from their roster. Hopefully, the boys will find a new home, or go independant now.
I've previously told you about the Home Depot prank that the crew of improveverywhere.com managed to pull off in a Home Depot store in New York. Thanks to my friend Melissa in Texas, who sent me the link to this great "Ben Folds Fake" that the crew recently pulled off while on a two-night stint at the Hamerstein Ballroom in New York.
With the help of the band, the I.E. "agents" were able to enter the stage and pretend to be Ben and band lip-syncing until the audio track skipped. The whole thing is a hillarious read, and the entire post on improveverywhere.com really tells the story best. But, for those of you too impatient to read the whole story, I've included some video of the stunt below:
Is it the middle of Nevember already? The weather here in the A-T-L just turned cold, like yesterday (cold = the temperature at which the boxter-driving tools on the freeway will finally stop putting the top down). Anyway, Thanksgiving is next week for those of you in the US, which means a short week (for me at least). The following Friday will be December 1st- and the beginning of my countdown to the end of the year. Yeah, that means "Best Of" and all. This week's mix is more great music, spanning many genres, and hopefully rockin' your ass off. One totally guilty pleasure on the mixtape is singer/actress Marla Sokoloff, who was one of "the twins" in Dude, Where's My Car? with Jennifer Garner, and who's new series Big Day is set to start airing on ABC soon, and looks like another American rip-off of a great British comedy series Worst Week Of My Life, but it's not, because the real US version of that show is still in development at Fox. But, now I'm rambling about television, but I do love Marla- and she's got an album out, so it's still kinda 'bout the music, right? Anyhow- download, listen, enjoy- and remember to go out and buy the stuff you like.
Remember that HDR image of London over the Thames from two weeks ago? Well, I've gone back to the same photographer for this week's image. Another great HDR image. This one is of the street near Spitalfields Market in London. It's brilliant colours are exaggerated by the HDR process giving it the appearance of an architect's rendering, rather than real life. Check out more HDR images from Wili Hybrid on flickr.com
I've listened to this album all weekend on repeat, and still am not sick of it: Skin And Bones is the new live, mostly acoustic album from the incredible Foo Fighters. I wasn't really a fan of the Foos until I saw them on tour with RHCP back in 2000. Since, I've grown to love every song they've ever done. Last year's In Your Honor showcased the more acoustic side of Dave Grohl and the band, but this live performance really showcases the other side of rock's best screamer. This release coul dalso double as a "best of" compilation- as the set (recorded at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles) covers some of Grohl's best songs to date. The title track sounds great fleshed out here, but still retains the same simple qualities from when he played it (shortly after writing it) on BBC Radio 1 in July 2005. If you're a Foos fan, you probably already picked up a copy. If you're not, give this live album a listen, and chances are, you will be by the time you're done!
Earlier this week, I was out somewhere shoping, and the store-wide music shifted from something AAA to christmans music. My stomach turned, and I felt the sudden urge to run out of the store screaming. Seriously, do we need to be bombarded by this crap already? There are about 50 total songs that get heavy rotation newar the holiday- but the start of November is hardly near the holiday. Ugh. That's my rant for this week - wait, not quite. Also, it's like 80 degrees outside my office right now, I've got the window open, and I'm thinking what the hell happened to fall?. Now I'm done.
Okay, now for the mixtape. Again, the mixtape is short on rap tracks. Only one made the list this time: Bang from Jibbs, that guy responsible for the annoying Chain Hang Low track. I gave his debut a listen, and Bang redeemed him a bit for Chain. Anyway, other than Jibbs, Volume 45 is mostly Brit rock, AAA and a little indie rock - go figure. Enjoy, and have a great weekend everyone!
This week's cover art comes from the flickr.com account of re-ality, and was foind by searching flickrlilli for the term 'november'. I thought it was an appropriate result.
Brittany Murphy (born Brittany Bertolotti) had a hit early this summer when she lent her voice to Paul Oakenfold’s dance track Faster Kill Pussycat. Now, she’s singing again- this could easily go into the Duke’s collection of Actors Who Sing, and Singers Who Act. The Happy Feet OST includes her cover of the Queen hit Somebody To Love, which was reworked for the movie. A little bit camp for my tastes, but the girl’s got potential (put a good enough engineer behind jsut about anyone, and they can have potential). Either way, she’s kinda easy on the eyes, and she was born in the ATL, so give it a listen if you like:
We Are Scientists dropped an amazing compilation of b-sides and rarities this week, titled Crap Attack (which only gets more and more fun to say out loud). On it, the California-born band does versions of hits Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt and The Great Escape acoustically, and a faithful cover of the Phil Spector-penned, Ronettes hit Be My Baby. The 60's cover follows in fellow NME Tourmates Arctic Monkeys' version of Baby I'm Yours (IMHO). My favorite track on the compilation is thier live acoustic cover of Sigur Ros' Hoppípolla.
Pick it up today at your local UK record shop (or on Amazon.co.uk if you're a yank like me) - with a bonus DVD that include video performances of the tracks on the album!
I heard the album version of this song today, and was reminded that Furtado had attempted to record it with Coldplay's Chris Martin. His performance on the track is so bad (par for Chris Martin though), that it didn't make the album, even though it's Chris Martin. Ugh. Anyway, so that everybody knows how awful the track could have been:
Did anyone else catch the Weeds fever on Showtime this fall? I watched all of the first season in a week, and was hooked. But season two has kinda left me dry- except in themusical department. Every episode in season two started with the theme song (Little Boxes), done by a different artist. The uber-catchy tune was originally done up by Malvina Reynolds, and started each episode of season one. My favorites are the Death Cab, Ozomatli, and Regina Spektor takes. I expect Weeds will return next year with new episodes, especially with the cliffhanger finale they left us with in season 2. I'm completely into Dexter now, even without a theme-tune gimmick, the show is great.
(NOTE: this is my first post untilizing ezarchive version 3.0 - the 64 Kbps limit sucks, as does the daily limit. Therefore, ezarchive now sucks. I'm looking for a new host)
Added bonus: Snoop Dogg's little joint about the fictional hybrid plant that Mary Lousie Parker's milf-to-dealer character peddles to the residents of Agrestic. Snoop Dogg - Milf Weed
