My Favorite Xmas Song

the Pogues - Fairytale Of New YorkMaybe I'm a grinch, or maybe I'm just an Atheist stuck in a christian dominated world, but I realy don't get into al this christmas music. In fact, I think I'm allergic. I hear a traditional xmas song, and my stomach gets all squirmy, and if it's in a public place I feel an uncontrollable urge to run away. Popular christamas songs have a similar, but lessened effect on me, unless it's Mariah Carey, but there's one song that I actually lok forward to hearing this time of year- and honestly, how could a grinch like me not love a song with the lines Happy Christmas your arse / I pray God it's our last? Anyway, here's my ONLY favorite christmas song:

Atlanta LIVE: Part 2 (or, The One I Forgot)

Tovah Rinah and The Way HomeCrap! I totally felt like I was forgetting something earlier when I posted about some terrific Atlanta bands that I'd seen recently. It took about an hour to come back to me, but I had forgotten to mention Tovah Rinah and The Way Home (sooo sorry Tovah & crew)! I've seen them live in their entire ensemble of eight, and once stripped down to a duo at Smith's Atlanta room. If you like folk, Americana, bluegrass, or just plain great songs, check out Tovah at one of their upcoming Atlanta shows, listen to Walk Me Home and pick up a copy of their debut album here.

There are a few more Atlanta artists that are near and dear to me, that I've intentionally left out, for now… look for a post on them soon!

Atlanta LIVE

First off, I need to apologize for being a bad blogger- it's been crazy moving offices and doing xmas shopping and all this past couple of weeks, and I've not gotten around to writing anything about some of the really cool musical stuff that's happened…so, here's my first attempt at catching up:

Atlanta LIVE:
Man. Orch., Estates, StellamarisOver the past couple of weeks, there have been some amazing shows at my favorite Atlanta venue- The 585 Music Hall. Estates played a while back, but I never got around to telling you how much I liked them. Multiple UK and Ueropean influences inflect their music, ranging from the vocalisms of Muse's Matthew Bellamy (listen to Houses to the musical sensibility of Damon Albarn. The great news is that Estates will be back in Atlanta on the 6th of January at The 585 with Manchester Orchestra and Stellamaris.

The TomatoesMore recently, The Tomatoes played another great set, opening at the PasserBy CD release show last week. It was the second time I've seen them live (the first was their Atlantis Music Festival showcase), and I'm totally hooked. The Tomatoes play a brand of fun, fast and furious punk that just plain kicks ass (listen to Fight Song. The power trio have put up a great show both times, and I highly recommend you see them next time they're out (trust me, I'll let you know).

PasserByI mentioned that PasserBy (myspace) dropped their new CD at a show last weekend, and just wanted to mention them again, because it's been a pleasure watching (and listening) to this band's live show mature and grow. The band's self-released debut is titled Tension and Release and is available at their shows. (listen to Majority Is The Minority).

The Modern SkirtsFinally, I want to mention a band that I hadn't even heard of until they played recently: The Modern Skirts are an Athens, GA band that have a great indie-rock/pop sound going on. They've been playing the Atlanta area a lot lately, and are playing the Earl this weekend and the grand New Year's Eve show at The Hyatt Regency downtown. Listen to their infinately catchy Seventeen Dirty Magazines, and tell me they aren't like an American version of The Feeling?

Okay, I feel just a bit better for having gotten that out. But, there have been so many great acts that I've seen locally lately- I must write about them soon! Coming up next: New Music from my blogger friends!
