Friday Mixtape Volume 107

Friday Mixtape Volume 107Welcome to the weekend! Not too much in the new releases this week, so I did a little forward-looking to dig up some tracks for the mixtape. Idlewild drops new music on the UK in a couple of weeks, and ever since Gary Lightbody spun that first track on Radio 1 last month, I've been waiting ot hear more. Finally, I have, and I'm sharing it with you! Willy Mason's new single is amazing, and I've been listening to it a lot lately- his album is out mid-March. Bifyf Clyro has been all over the Zane Lowe show, and for good reason. Their first single off the upcoming album (March 5) is terrific, and here. And the new Kings of Leon leaked this week, and every other blog has it, so I figured I'd pass one of those along to you (thanks to Neiles Life). Otherwise, there's an interesting track from the Manchester act Cherry Ghost which tweeked my ears, but I haven't heard anything else yet? Anyone know anything about this? New Feist track is all over the net, and in here so you don't have ot go anywhere else to hear it. A few other great tracks rounding out the mix, but I'm outta time. Party tonight at Fado (oscars)!

Simple is good. On the suggested theme of "Birds on a Wire", I searched Flickr.com and found the simple black-and-white image of a single bird perched on a wire. This picture was taken (made?) by Egan Snow.

Obligatory VD Post

Cupid's DeadA friend sent this to me this morning, so I'm reposting the link as the obligatory Valentine's Day post. I'm not exactly sure what the 'contest' portion of this promotion is all about, but the Nettwerk music group has put together a mixtape of love songs by some pretty amazing artists. BNL, Matt Wertz, Hem, Rosie Thomas and more appear in this free download.

Go to the mini-site for the link. Did I mention it's FREE?

That's the last I'll say about this VD crap., there are more important things to blog about today.

Sweep The Leg Johnny!

I stumbled across this on Neatorama the other day, and just now got around to posting about it. It’s the video for a song called Sweep The Leg by Los Angeles’ 80’s-loving band No More Kings. The video is a tricked out salute to the 1984 movie The Karate Kid, and features appearances by the Cobra Kai gang (the original actors, including “Johnny“). Ralph Macchio even makes a cameo at the end (Dennis Haskins, who played Mr. Belding on Saved By The Bell appears in the opening scene, but he wasn’t in The Karate Kid).

That JT & Scarlett Video That Everyone Else is Blogging About, So I Will Too

Scarlett JohanssonAny video that gets its own teaser-trailer should be absoultely amazing, right? Put the insanely hot Scarlett Johansson in it, and it's a sure winner, right? Throw in a major music video driector, and a script written by Nick Cassavetes, and there's no way it could blow as much as the new Justin Timberlake waste of marketing budget- except it does, cuz it is.

Rumored to have a budget of more than $1 million, the 9:20 minute music video features a love triangle between JT, Scarlett, and actor Shawn Hatosy, and a car chase that ends in a really pointless wrecking of a nice car….sigh. How many indie bands could have been supported on tour by the record label's $1 mil?

Friday Mixtape Volume 106

Friday Mixtape Volume 106It's been a slow week in music for me this week, and I'm not particularly thrilled about anything on the new release calendar next week either. I may have to do a myspace indie-bands countdown for next week or something. March and April are looking really good, with a hella lot of new music coming out in every genre. For this week's mixtape, I turned to various other music blogs, and google to get the following 11 tracks together. I shoul dthank these people now: Stereogum pointed out the Samuel Jackson movie Blakc Snake Moan, and I dug through the site to find the mp3's for the entire soundtrack readily gleanable from my browser cache. Neiles Life covered the b-sides coming out with the vairious versions of Bloc Party's new album, where I found The Once And Future King. Duke of Straw turned me on to the Trews' song (another band who will give their entire album to your cache). I Guess I'm Floating is responsible for the Carlberg track. Heather at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends found that awesome track by The Coup. The Hype Machine helped me find that Ronson radio rip from an Italian music blog called Batteria Ricaricabile. That New Rags track came form the good peeps at Music For Robots, and that wedding singer delight from Friends OF The bride was given to us by the other Jamie. So, I've given up all my sources once again. Have at 'em, tell Jamie sent ya.

The noir-ish photo of some steps comes from Jan Tik at Flickr.com.
