Damn, it's been another rough week here for me. Travis, Tori, Dino, Jack White…all here. I highly recommend this J Tillman guy, and Joel Ortiz is amazing. Right now, I’m all wrapped up in a printing project (see below), so this is way short. More later I guess.
I plan on being up to my elbows in screen printing ink this weekend, producing new team shirts for the Hellfish- thus the "ink" theme of this week's mixtape art. The flickr artist call himself tupwanders. I wonder where tup wanders?
I'm just not hot for anything new right now- but, I didn't want to leave this space blank, so I'm going to go through a few of the items that have come across my newsreader today- just think of it as and all-in-one guide to a mid-week newfeed catch-up (or just know that I'm feeling lazy)…
Feist is the woman of the hour, or month even. Her name pops up in posts almost every ten minutes, and Shameless Complacency has a great collection of Feist B-sides today.
I've been hearing Gym Class Heroes' Cupid's Chokehold on Radio1 lately, and turn off the radio every time it comes on. Sorry, I loved The Queen And I and New Friend Request, but Supertramp crosses that line. Stereogum found their cover of the Beach Boys last night, which I don't think is really that bad, but when do I ever see eye-to-eye with Stereogum?
IndieBlogHeaven let me know about some free, live Lily Allen tracks from MTV. There are also tracks from Amy Winehouse and Cold War Kids there. You have to sign up/log in to dowload the .wma tracks, but it's Lily for cryin' out loud.
And finally, even though it's not music-related, this awesome video was posted by Wooster Collective this morning. The device in play on the streets at night there looks like an amazing project- part video game, part art tool. I'm in love. Where do I get one?
Alrighty, this week's mixtape is a bit of a rush-job, as I've been terribly busy this week, and am busy again tonight, so I don't have too much time to write. First, I'd like to point out some new material from Travis, QOTSA, and CAKE. Next, my favorite Aussie chanteuse, Missy Higgins is due to release her sophomore album lately, and it's been too long since I've heard her singing on my mixtape. I'm totally in love with the woman, and love about anything she's ever done, but let me know what you think of it in the comments. Brett Dennon makes another appearance on the SFFM with his newest, and then there are some new outfits: The Kissing Trail, Wax Tailor (very cool) and The Twilight Sad for ya. Rounding out the mixtape are tracks from artists playing tonight at the Roxy in Buckhead under the VH1 "You Oughta Know" banner: Rocco Deluca, The Feeling (!), and Mat Kearney. That's it, that's all….enjoy your weekend, enjoy the mixtape. I'll try to be more productive next week.
I've continued the idea of making the weekly mixtape cover image from flickr.com into the banner here this week, and chosen something a bit more summertime than last week's. This image of a sunflower comes from flickr.com user audreyjm529, who has lots of great shots of flowers and wildlife on her pages, just in time for Earth Day!
I've been damn busy this week, and haven't posted a thing since the last mixtape. So, yes, this is filler.
Stereogum posted a video for the new Snow Patrol anthem for the Spirderman 3 movie this week, and pointed out several other videos that feature the band as orchestral accompaniment to a children's stage play- including the new Shins video for Phantom Limb. I think the kids acting out scenes from the spiderman trilogy of movies is great, but what elementary school play would actually hang a kid upside down for effect?
Anyway, the first video like this that I can remember (I don't watch a lot of music videos, never have) was for Crash Test Dummies' Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm I was a big fan of the Dummies in the 90's, and had forgotten how great some of their lyrics are. Anyways, take a trip down memory lane with me here:
If you know of any other "band plays while kids put on a stage play" videos, put 'em in a comment (these posts, they have comments you know). Alright, back to work now. Mixtape will be around later.
This week seemed to drag on and on for me. I don't know if it was the return of sunny, warm days here in the ATL, or maybe the strain of my first soccer match of the season (I was sore for days), or that there seemed to be nothing new in my iPod this week that excited me. Sure, I've been listening to the new Mark Ronson, but I can't get by on one sound alone. I had to go back a bit to pull up some tracks for this week's mixtape. I've been hearing a lot from a few british acts recently, but hadn't put any of them on a mixtape yet- saving them for the proverbial rainy day I guess. Anyway, there's Dykeenies, Pigeon Detectives, Good Shoes, The Twang and The Crib here from across the pond, and Pela and Ari Hest from New York. Closer to home, locals (or nearly locals) Estates and Modern Skirts round out the list…because they both kick ass!
On a bit of a side rant: I've put in Colour Revolt- who are awesome and need all the support they can get these days after their touring van and equipment were stolen. They're in the process of buying back their own gear, which really blows. This is a sick new trend in thievery, and I'm sick every time I hear another band's touring rig has been stolen- there's even a new website to help track these incidents, which is a sad indication of the problem. Anyway, their tour schedule is on their myspace, and a great thing to do would be go see them when they play your city, k?
I've used a photo by flickr user jurvetson before, and returned for this pic of…well, take a guess (without reading the comments on the flickr page)! Then, go to his flickr page and check your guess. Also, I've revamped the banner on the blog, and incorporated this week's mixtape cover photo into it…I'm going to continue this as a trial. Let me know what you think!
The Atlanta Dogwood Festival is this weekend- Downtown Atlanta, in Piedmont Park. The free spring festival includes all those springtime festival things that you'd expect, dog with frisbees, art booths hocking shit you don't need, and lots of ancle-biters. But they've also got some good music lined up, so I might head down there (if the weather doesn't suck) on Sunday to check a few of them out. You may as well too, if you live nearby. Full schedule of artists, and all the other info (*except for beer prices!) on their website. Nevermind that the links on the homepage menu don't work. Idiots are using MS publisher or something…
Standing at the entryway to a Washington D.C.'s metro station, a man plays stands by an open violin case- the instrument in his hand, playing. Just another subway performer, right? Nope, Joshua Bell performed as a busker at L'Enphant Metro station in January as part of a Washington Post experiment to see if people would recognize this type of talent as they rushed by on their daily commutes. An interesting story, complete with video clips, on the Wahington Post webiste this past weekend tells the results of this little experiment. Read it here.
Okay good Friday to ya..not Good Friday, but just good Friday. This week's mixtape has got some KILLER new shit from Mark Ronson, The Academy Is…, and Dizzee Rascal. Also, more from Kings Of Leon and The National, and the obligatory radio hit stuff from Linkin Park and Timbaland. But in all, I really like the mix, lots of variety to keep me from getting bored. Though, I have to admit that I'll be spending most of this week listening to that Ronson stuff.
Right this instant I'm listening to that Dizzee joint, and holy hell- he's a frickin' genius! I can't wait for Maths & English- June 6th! And I'm probably in the minority when I say that I'm disappointed by The National's Boxer…I'm going back to listen to The Aligator. Okay, enough useless rambling from me. Enjoy the mixtape. Send me messages about itand stuff.
"Reflection for a Grey Day" is name of the image I used today. It's by steve FE. Just because I liked it.
The Duke Of The Late Greats put together a Good Friday post today- 45 tracks, each one with "Good" in the title… and it's a hell of a good list! GO check it out.
