I've been trying to catch some of the new fall television shows this week, but there are just so many of them, it's impossible. I'm sure that after a couple weeks, I'll be sick of most of them, and will stop watching. For now, however, my brain is bein saturated with ads from Target and Old Navy- Constantly bombarded with the warm-fuzzy images backed by commercial use of new music. One such case is Ingrid Michaelson (who leads off the mixtape this week)- who is the singer/songwriter behind Old Navy's recent spot for their newest sweater line. It caught my ear, and million sof others as well. Michaelson is the #1 unsigned artist on mysapce this week. Another newbie (to me), Adele, got pegged by both Zane Lowe and Jo Whiley in recent weeks. I think her track sounds suspiciously like Sia's Breathe, but it's still a solid track. I'm really diggin' Sean Na Na this week as well- check out their myspace for more. There's all kinds of other great new music on this week's mix, but I'm short on time, so just take my word for it: it's good. Download, listen, comment, have fun!
Fabio Giolito Took an amazingly detailed macro shot of someone's eye, complete with wet eyelashes (crying?), for this week's cover photo, and I've forgotten what search phrase I used to find it, but it's cool.
Another artist I was able to enjoy this weekend was Peter Searcy and his band. Peter claims Louisville, Kentucky as home- just a hop and skip from my hometown in Indiana, and used to front a band called Squirrel Bait in high school. My blog is called Squirrel Food. Coincidence? Maybe. Anyway, Searcy's blend of pop-rock is just the way I like it, with great modlies, energy and soul. Oh, and he plays a cello with nekkid chicks on it too. Sorry, the paintings on the cello are secondary to the sounds he makes on it. Actually, I think singing while playing cello is probably a lot tougher than singing and playing guitar- and he's good at both.
The contraption aboce comes to you from the 80's, courtesy ofNewLaunches.com. Before the iPod, Discman, or even Walkman… there was the Mister Disc portable player for vinyl records! Read more about Mister Disc.
Just a reminder that Office drops thier debut album, A Night At The Ritz, featuring Oh My. Hurry, supplies are limited, and you don't want to miss out on this opportunity to own a bit of pop history!
I saw lots of bands over the weekend, thanks to the Atlantis Music Festival. While I'm playing catch-up in general this week, I'll try to update with some of the acts that impressed me over the weekend. For themost part, I stayed at one venue (Smith's Olde Bar) all weekend, as transfering from one venue to another always results in lost time and opportunitie to hear new music. So, I spent most of the nights drifting between the full main stage performers and the shorter acoustic sets in Smith's Atlanta Room.
One of the advantages of Smith's main stage is that it's large enough to accomodate full groups, and give them room to move. And movement is what makes The Lord Is My Shotgun's Chance Wall so cool. Chance energizes the stage- strutting, leaping, and reaching to the sky with the microphone as if to usher lightning bolts from Zeus direcctly into his veins.
Atlantis Music Festival. Lots o' bands playing at ten venues. Wristbands or laminate passes get you into all venues, but you have to drive around between them, probably missing half the shows you want to see. Last year, the ole 585 was hosting. This year, 585 is no more. But I'll be around the various venues all weekend, and will report back to you all on Monday (well, maybe Tuesday). On the mixtape this weekend, you'll find a few friends and favourites from the festival, some killer new Foos, Thurston Moore, and four new bands (to me). Download it, burn it, listen on repeat, and have a great weekend!
innoxiuss' most popular photo of some train tracks sliding into the ocean in Cuba, is my pick for this week's cover. I found it on FLickr.com searching for Creative Commons photos tagged "Atlantis"- for the festival thingy…get it?
Atlanta's own music Altantis Music Festival kicked off last night with performances at 10 Atlanta music venues. I went out after soccer practice last night to catch The Bridges at Smith's. Every time I see these girls (and guy), I am more impressed. Before catching The Bridges upstairs, I was able to catch a bit of The Kin. Originally from Australia, and currently residing in New York, they are helmed by brothers Isaac and Thorry Koren. They played last night with a percusionist who was able to bring a lot of sound out of a few hand drums and cymbals, adding to the multi-layered sound the brothers create with acoustic guitar and keys. Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/thekin. Lots of other acts playing all weekend long at the festival- check ou tthe lineup at AtlantisMusic.com.
I haven't felt like doing much of anything this week…including blogging. My week since the last mixtape has been absolutely craptastic, and so the blog has suffered. I did manage to pull together a mixtape though- New stuff from Ghostland Observatory and Sia, Atlanta locals Tentonic, and my friends Novah- who will be playing tonight at Vinyl. I am actually travelling to the long-awaited wedding of a couple of old friends. I'll be Back Home Again In Indiana for the weekend.
I return to a great source of photos this week from Mayr's flickr.com collection with another game. The last time I used her photo, it was baseball. This time, it's dominoes.
