Friday Mixtape Volume 136

Friday Mixtape Volume 136Short weeks are so confusing to me. last weekend was a holiday weekend, and felt like I just got an extra Saturday in it. Because of that, I've felt a day behind all week. I almost forgot that today would be Friday Mixtape day all together. But, I didn't- I've got your mmixtape right here. It's full of good stuff from people you know, like Gomez and Stereophonics and KT Tunstall. It's got one hip-hop track from Kanye, just because it was sitting in my playlist looking lonely beside the rest of the album tracks, and because I thought an even ten tracks would be good. It's also got some stuff by people you might not know: Maria Taylor, Jenn Grant, and locals The Manchester Orchestra who played Dave Letterman last night (if anyone's got video, PUT IT ON YouTUBE and let me know)! I added a new local band that I stumbled upon, and am diggin' on recently: The Love Willows are a young trio with a harmonious americana/country/pop thing going on. They're opening tonight at the Loft for Georgia and Corey Crowder.

Hamed Saber is from Iran, where government internet censorship attempts to prevent all internet users in the country from viewing images on flickr.com. As well as being a talented photographer, he has also cleverly written a Firefox plugin to allow users in his country (and others) to continue to use flickr.com, bypassing the county-wide internet filtering. His photograph of a single sunflower thriving amidst a sea of wilted peers is very cool, and this week's mixtape art. Read an interview with Hamed Saber, and check out the rest of his photos on flickr.

Download it here while you can!

Pete Doherty Forces Kittens to Smoke Crack

Pete forces a kitten to smoke crackYeah, it's sick- The sun reports today that the Babyshambles singer and winner of the douchebag award force-feeds kittens crack out of a modified liquor bottle… for kicks. The Sun article claims the info and picture to be leaked from a friend of Doherty's. If the report is credible, I want to know: what kind of asshat friend sits there and lets him do this, let alone take pictures?

Pavarotti Dies at Age 71

Luciano Pavarotti w/ Timbaland

Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian tenor that brought traditional opera to the masses and performed for packed stadiums and television audiences, died of cancer today at age 71. U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to Pavarotti in a message on the band's website this morning. Pavarotti's last performance was signing Puccini's Nessun Dorma at the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Read more at Billboard.com.

The iPhone Without a Phone? Meet the iPod Touch

Apple announced it's new variant to the ever-popular iPod line today: the iPod Touch. It's pretty much an iPhone without any phone functions. Music, movies, and the WiFi web broswer make it hell more useful than the old iPods, plus it's got that cool touch-screen interface that you just want to play with. I can't find if it's running the full OS that the iPhone does, but I would imagine it does, so some of the custom apps coming out now for the iPhone would run on it, posibly making it a PDA-substitution as well. Nifty, but I probably won't be buying one for $299… anyone want to buy one for me?
