Boo! I know that scared you… Happy Halloween everybody! Iwasn’t really planning on doing this, but I ended up with some time last night, and had this playlist running on my desktop anyway, so I thought I’d share. The mix isn’t all that spooky, but every track is aptly named. Also, I’m linking the tracks individually for the first time as an experiment. I’d recomment downloading the whole thing, cuz it’s just that good, but you can cherry-pick if you want. So, get downloading, then go steal some kid’s candy!
Paul Sapiano is the shutterbug behind the H2K7 cover art. I noticed this shot on flickr last week while searching for a SFFM image, and was part of the reason I decided to go ahead and do a Halloween 2007 mix. Thanks for the motivation, Paul!
It finally feels like October in the ATL- just in time for one of my favorite holidays. In past years, I’ve gone all-out on costumes, spending weeks devising and building them. Sometimes, I get really imaginative and spend ages building the costume. I was a postage stamp once (”how do you dress as a stamp?” you ask… wouldn’t you like to know?), and a taco another year (just like the Verizon commercial). Some years, I go for authenticity (I researched all the parts of a traditional Samurai costume last year, and made it from scratch). This year, I’m drawing a blank. No ideas. No plans really, but I’m sure I’ll find a party to go to. So, I’m asking for your help: leave me ideas for a simple, quick costume that rocks!
Music: I saw a review of The Pangs’ single Fighterplane on musicOMH.com, and was really impressed when I heard it, so I thought I’d lead off the mix with that. Foals have been around for a while, but I forgot about them, and then I heard them on the radio this week and decided to slip them into the mix. I haven’t mad eup my mind about Until June yet. Katie Herzig was a Grey’s Anatomy this week, and you should know by now that I’ll listen to anything that runs on that show. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy is on the I’m Not There soundtrack with his cover of Simple Twist of Fate, which is also the title of a favorite Steve Martin film. Random? I’m in a random mood. Earlimart is another band that I had locked away in the basement, and have only decided to let out this week, but Bowerbirds were new to me, and I really like them. I threw in another track from Laura Marling for good measure, and a mellow minute (or three). The Last Town Chorus is Megan Hickey, who plays lap-steel guitar- giving this track an ethereal quality that I really dig. Forever Like Red are a new four-piece from London that are starting to generate buzz across the pond. The Deadly Syndrome are from LA, and I should have included their track I Hope I Become A Ghost for the holiday, but I missed it. So, You’ll have to go listen to it elsewhere. There ya go- a full track-by track rundown of this week’s mixtape. Hope it was enjoyed.
Kieran Connellan snapped this week’s photo - a plume of smoke, swirling with vortices. I started out looking for something holiday-appropriate by searching with the word ghost, but came across this first, and just went with it. So what if it’s not ghoulish or creepy, it alludes to something hidden, or maybe something sinister- just out of frame. Use your imagination- after all, Halloween is this week!
An 18 year-old student from Leeds, Nick Haley, put together a 30-second spot for the new iPod Touch using images and footage available from apple.com and CSS’s Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex, and posted it on YouTube (below). Apple took notice, and contacted him about coming to Los Angels to re-make his commercial in full broadcast-ready format. Haley’s new commercial will run during the World Series. Read more on the New York Times site.
Please bear with me as I try to get Wordpress Theme issues worked out- I don’t know why the previous theme kept dropping off, but I’m working on a new one now. Should be ready by the time I publish this week’s mixtape.
The first new track from Brand New since last year’s The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is called Fork & Knife. The single previously popped up in demo form several years ago, but was not officially released. This week, it was supposed to be available on iTunes, but instead seems to have been released on amazon.com instead.

Kid Rock, a.k.a. Robert James Ritchie, was arrested early Sunday morning after a fight broke out between a Waffle House patron, Ritchie, and memeber’s of Kid’s entourage. AJC.com reports:
Saturday night, he rocked a sold-out Tabernacle at a show supporting “Rock N Roll Jesus,” currently the No. 1 album in the country and the first chart-topper of his 17-year career.
Wait- Kid Rock has the #1 album in the country? That just makes me glad I don’t listen to radio anymore.
A few hours later, Kid Rock, who calls his genre-bending blend of country, rap and southern rock “hick-Hop,” was arrested after police said he and his entourage beat up a customer — at a local Waffle House.
Ugh, ‘hick-hop’, really? That’s a genre we can all do without. The rest of the story goes: Ritchie and his crew went to Waffle House on Buford Highway in the wee hours Sunday, where a male patron recognized one of the females in Kid’s crew, and the head hick decided to throw down on the guy, call him. After that, five other guys in the entourage decided to go ahead and get scattered, smothered, or covered with him. After the fight, they apparently though it would be a good idea to leave, so they got on the bus and drove away- only to be pulled over moments later and booked for battery.
The “other guy” threw a punch through a window, costing more that $500, so he got booked for felony criminal damage to property, and will have a world of hurt waiting for him on that.
