Friday Mixtape Volume 148

Friday Mixtape Volume 148Three long nights of hauling boxes and chairs and clothes and, well, you know- all my shit from Sandy Springs to Buckhead- Most nights going until after 2 am. But I’m done, and SF HQ is now in the heart of BH in ATL. Enough abbreviations for ya? Now, if I could just remember which box I put my iPod…

Hawthorne Heights Guitarist Found Dead

Hawthorne Heights
Dayton, Ohio band Hawthorne Heights announced on their website this weekend that their guitarist, Casey Calvert, had passed away during the night Friday night. The band’s message to their fans reads:

Today is probably the worst day ever. Its with our deepest regrets that we have to write this. Casey Calvert passed away in his sleep last night. We found out this afternoon before sound-check. We’ve spent the entire day trying to come to grips with this and figure out as much as possible. At this time we’re not sure what exactly happened. Just last night he was joking around with everyone before he went to bed. We can say with absolute certainty that he was not doing anything illegal. Please, out of respect to Casey and his family, don’t contribute or succumb to any gossip you may hear. We don’t want his memory to be tainted in the least. Casey was our best friend. He was quirky and awesome and there will truly be no others like him! His loss is unexplainable. As soon as we know more we will let you know.

Hawthorne Heights were due to play the Roxy in Atlanta tonight.

Sweet Caroline Revealed

Catching up on last week’s news: Neil Diamond confesses to writing his eponymous hit Sweet Caroline about the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” Diamond recalled. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.”

JFK with his childrenDiamond revealed the inspiration while taking a break from recording his new album with mega-producer Rick Rubin, and recently performed the song via satellite for Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s 50th birthday party.

Sweet Caroline Lyrics (just because):

Where it began, I can’t begin to know when
But then I know it’s growing strong
Wasn’t the spring
And spring became the summer
Who’d believe you’d come alongHands, touching hands, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seem so good
I’ve been inclined to believe it never wouldAnd now I, I look at the night
And it don’t seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two, oh
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulder
How can I hurt when holding youOne, touching one, reaching out
Touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seem so good
Oh I’ve been inclined to believe it never would

Friday Mixtape Volume 147

Friday Mixtape Volume 147I hope everybody that celebrates Thanksgiving had a great one! Now, here come the excuses: It was a short week… I was preoccupied with the great SF HQ relocation effort… and I’m cat-sitting. I’ve been a bad blogger this week. Holiday weeks are always tough to find time to scour the net for music, and this is one of those where the whole US seems to shut down. I hope to be all relocated to sunny Buckhead by the next time I post a mixtape, and also to have time during the move to pull another mix together. Anyway, I managed to pull together a set of tracks this week, and as I sit here listening to some of them while I put the post together, I didn’t do so bad. I hope you think so as well.

Cheerful Pumpkin” by Teo was simple, available, and one of the first shots that came up, so it’s this week’s banner.

Friday Mixtape Volume 146

Friday Mixtape Volume 146I have to move. My lease expires on the 30th, and the new management company at my complex, Worthing Company, really blows. So, I’m apartment hunting this weekend. Atlanta’s a big city, with lots of empty apartments- but I hate commuting, and therefore want to find a place that offers an easy route to the office (in the burbs), yet is still near all the ‘action’. As I’ve only got 2 weeks left to find a place, pack, move and clean out the old one, I’m starting to stress. I hate moving.

I’ve got an extra-long mixtape for you this week: 14 tracks. Mostly because I heard so much stuff this week that I wanted to really give a listen to, but had so little time. I’ll be listening as I drive around the ATL this weekend. Well, except for Saturday, when I’ll have The Police on repeat all day.

This weeks rather dramatic mixtape photo is from flickr user Mikael Marguerie, who snapped this shot of Paris police as they prepared to confront rioters this past May. The reason behind my pick is far less dramatic however: I searched for “police” on flickr because I’m totally psyched about seeing the Police at Phillips arena on Saturday night!
