I happened to catch the “envelope” commercial for the new Mac Air the other night, and immediately recognized Yael Naim’s New Soul in it.
The thing is ultra-thin, but can you actually do anything with it? I want an Eee.

New Gnarls Barkley? While not confirmed as being from the dynamic duo that made us Crazy, it sure sounds a hell of a lot like it. Go To Mission Freak to get the MP3 of Gnarls Barkley - Run.

Sorry the spinner/AOL flash player is so annoying, but it’s not available on YouTube yet.

All this week, I’ve been awakened over an hour early by the sound of some asshat’s car alarm going off. I’ve started each day off having been shorted an hour of sleep because some idiot has pimped out his SUV with an alarm that goes off every time the wind blows. This stolen sleep may explain why I had The Script’s Before The Worst on the mixtape this week. I listened to the song on Last.fm’s new music streaming thingy (which, BTW- check your browser cache after listening to tracks…yep, they’re all in there in 128 Kbps MP3’s) this morning and thought “Oh, that’s kinda good- I should add it to the mixtape”, not even recognizing that I had included it two weeks ago. Ugh. Anyway, fresh track this week from Ghostland Observatory, Goodtimes Goodtimes, One Night Only and The Whigs (who are playing ATL tonight…anyone going?). Enjoy, I’m going to take a nap.
Tracklisting:
Black Mountain - Stormy High
Ghostland Observatory - Heavy Heart
Goodtimes Goodtimes - Kids
Great Northern - This is a Problem
One Night Only - You and Me
Racingreen - Plastic Paradise
Smolik - A Million Cheap Tricks (feat. Maya Singh)
Surrounded - In Comfort’s Tight Clothes
The Whigs - Right Hand on my Heart

Oh, Rihanna! Looks like you’ve lost that umbrella… you’re all wet!
The umbrella queen posed ohne regenschirm for the German version of men’s magazine FHM.

What a crazy week. It actually snowed in Atlanta, enough so that a friend of mine was able to make a mini-snowman. My brake lights stopped working, thanks to a well-known design fault in the brake pedal switch that activates them. Thankfully, the repairs were covered under a recall, and the snow melted before the lights went out.
Except for the Counting Crows, this week’s artists are all pretty much new to me- and they’re all great. It’s like a musical vacation for your ears. Start out in the UK with the slowhand blues of Back Door Slam’s Heavy on My Mind (playing Smith’s on Monday), stopping off for some Mississippi rock from Colour Revolt (playing the 40 Watt in Athens on Feb. 1), then head over to Nashville for a singer-songwriter names Matthew Perryman Jones. Next, bundle up to visit Minneapolis’ Vampire Hands and cut across the midwest to New England to hear Winterpills. Finally, pop back across the pond to Paris, France for a sample of Yael Naim. This showcase could be yours if… (sorry, after I started that trip, it just started sounding more and more like a Price Is Right showcase)
Anyways, there’s good music here that you might like to hear.
Tracklisting:
Back Door Slam - Heavy On My Mind
Colour Revolt - Naked And Red
Counting Crows - When I Dream of Michelangelo
Crushed Stars - Life Until Now
Matthew Perryman Jones - Refuge
Miwa Gemini - Pieces
The Billionaires - Eighties Movies
Vampire Hands - Opium Typhoon
Winterpills - A Folded Cloth
Yael Naim - New Soul

Nifty new We Are Scientists video, After Hours, on NME today. 30 Rock’s Katrina Bowden, who also appears in Fall Out Boy’s Dance Dance video, plays the object of Keith Murray and Chris Cain’s affections. There’s a dog, wine and a fight at the end. Stream it from NME’s website, or download below.
